Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 20, 2026. This policy explains how Approtic and Shelfwise handle information.
Privacy in plain language
Shelfwise does not require an account, show advertising, sell personal information, or include third-party tracking or advertising SDKs.
In the first release, your books, notes, ratings, reading progress, sessions, imports, and preferences are stored locally on your device.
Camera and barcode scanning
Shelfwise requests camera access only when you choose to scan an ISBN barcode. Barcode recognition happens on the device.
Shelfwise does not save or upload camera frames while scanning ISBN barcodes. You can deny camera access and add books manually instead.
Book searches and metadata
When you scan an ISBN or search for a book, the ISBN or search terms are sent to Open Library so Shelfwise can retrieve public book metadata and cover links. Your IP address and standard network request information are necessarily visible to that provider.
Open Library operates under its own terms and privacy practices. Shelfwise does not send your notes, ratings, reading progress, imported files, or full library to Open Library.
Imports, exports, and sharing
Goodreads and StoryGraph files you select are read locally to create library entries. Approtic does not upload those files to its servers.
CSV and JSON exports are generated on your device. When you share or save an export, Apple's system share sheet sends it only to the destination you choose.
Diagnostics and support
Shelfwise does not currently transmit the optional diagnostics preference shown in the app. Apple may provide App Store crash and diagnostic information according to your device privacy choices and Apple's policies.
If you contact support, Approtic receives the information you choose to include, such as your email address, message, screenshots, device model, operating-system version, and app version. We retain support records only as reasonably needed to respond, secure our services, and meet legal obligations.
Your choices and data deletion
You can edit or delete individual books in Shelfwise. The privacy settings screen also provides an option to delete the local Shelfwise library.
Deleting the app removes its locally stored data, subject to any device backup retained and controlled by Apple under your iCloud backup settings. You can contact us regarding information you sent directly to support.
Children and policy changes
Shelfwise is a general-audience reading utility and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly request personal information from children.
We may update this policy when Shelfwise, its providers, or legal requirements change. The date shown on this page identifies the latest version.
